Black Spider Monkey

Long, black fur and black facial skin identify this otherwise typical spider monkey, which feeds mainly on fruit, berries flowers, soft leaves, grubs, termites, and honey.

They live in large territorial troops, each occupying 150-230 hectares (370-570 acres). The troop splits into variable subgroups to feed, and meets in the evening with greeting calls.

On reaching maturity, females leave to join another troop. After a gestation of 225 days, the single young is born.

After 16 weeks, it rides on its mother’s back and is weaned by 18 months. Offspring of females high in the dominance hierarchy are more likely to survive to adulthood, when they move to other troops.
