The white-winged duck or white-winged wood duck is a large species of duck, formerly placed in the genus Cairina and allied with the dabbling ducks.

Range: Globally endangered breeding resident. Now restricted to few areas in NE India
Habitat: Undisturbed, secluded pools and marshes adjacent to evergreen, deciduous or swamp forests.

Large khaki, black-and-brown duck with whitish mottled head and neck. Lesser median coverts and inner edges of tertials whitish; secondaries bluish- grey. White edges of wings obvious in flight Male larger than female with whiter heads. Roosts nests on trees and tree holes. Rarely wanders from breeding grounds. Feeds on seeds, grain, rice, snails, small fish and insects.
